Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It builds on SEO, because AI engines often pull from search results, but it adds new goals: earning mentions across the web, writing answer-first pages and measuring how often AI answers name you. The short version: rank well in search, get talked about on trusted sites, publish fresh pages with real facts and measure your mention rate over many runs.
This guide covers what GEO is, how AI engines choose sources, what the research says works and does not, how to measure results and a 30-day plan you can start this week.
TL;DR
- GEO is getting your brand named and cited in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
- It builds on SEO, because AI engines often pull from search results.
- It adds mentions across the web and answer-first pages.
- Measure it across repeated runs, not single answers.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. A "generative engine" is any AI system that writes an answer instead of showing a list of links. When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what is the best invoicing app for freelancers?", the answer names a few brands and may cite a few pages. GEO is about being one of them.
The term comes in part from the GEO-bench research paper (KDD 2024, arxiv 2311.09735), which tested how changes to content affect whether AI engines use it.
GEO vs AEO vs SEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer | Be named and cited in AI answers |
| Main surface | Google and Bing results | Featured answers, voice, AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and similar |
| Main metric | Rankings, clicks, CTR | Answer share | Mention rate, citations, share of voice |
| Stable results? | Fairly stable day to day | Varies | Changes on almost every run |
AEO and GEO overlap so much that many teams use them as one term. In this guide, GEO covers both.
Why does GEO matter?
AI answers are now part of how people research purchases. Early data suggests this traffic can be valuable:
- In a Seer Interactive B2B case, ChatGPT traffic converted at 16%, compared with 1.8% for organic search.
- Ahrefs reported that 0.5% of sessions from AI gave 12.1% of sign-ups.
These are single cases, not promises. But they show why teams are paying attention. A small amount of AI traffic can matter a lot if the people who arrive are ready to buy.
AgenticSEO asks ChatGPT and Gemini your buyers' questions several times each week and shows your mention rate per prompt.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews pick sources?
No AI company publishes a full list of ranking rules. But research and the way these systems are built give us useful clues.
ChatGPT
When ChatGPT searches the web, it pulls candidate pages from a search index, reads them and writes an answer. Seer Interactive found that 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing top results. That means ranking well in Bing is closely tied to being cited by ChatGPT search.
Ahrefs also found that ChatGPT cites newer pages than Google organic results do. Fresh, updated content seems to have an edge.
Gemini
Gemini can ground its answers in Google Search. In simple terms, it looks up relevant results and builds an answer from them. So strong Google rankings and clear, quotable pages help here too.
Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews appear at the top of some Google results and link to source pages. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview visibility. In plain terms: brands that get talked about more across the web tend to show up more in AI Overviews. This is a correlation, not proof of cause, but it is one of the strongest signals in the research so far.
Different engines, different sources
Do not assume that winning in one engine means winning in all of them. Ahrefs found that only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Each engine has its own habits.
Some sources show up again and again, though. Semrush (in a study of 325,000 prompts) and Peec both found that Reddit is one of the top cited domains in AI search. Community discussion carries real weight.
| Engine | What seems to drive sources | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Search index results; 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing top results (Seer) | Do not ignore Bing. Keep pages fresh. |
| Gemini | Grounding in Google Search | Strong Google SEO still matters. |
| AI Overviews | Branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with visibility (Ahrefs) | Get your brand mentioned on other sites. |
| All engines | Reddit is a top cited domain (Semrush, Peec) | Take part in real community discussion. |

What works in GEO?
Here is what the research supports, with a note on how strong each piece of evidence is.
| Tactic | Evidence | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Rank well in Bing and Google | Seer: 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing top results | Strong |
| Earn branded mentions across the web | Ahrefs: 0.664 correlation with AI Overview visibility, 75k brands | Strong (correlation) |
| Add statistics, quotes and sources | GEO-bench: up to 40% higher visibility in tests | Medium (lab tests) |
| Keep content fresh | Ahrefs: ChatGPT cites newer pages than Google organic | Medium |
| Be present where Reddit discussions happen | Semrush and Peec: Reddit is a top cited domain | Medium |
| Track each engine separately | Ahrefs: about 11% of domains cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity | Medium |
1. Keep doing strong SEO
AI engines that search the web start from search results. If your page is not in the results, it is hard for the AI to find. Make sure your key pages are indexed in both Google and Bing, load fast and answer the query clearly.
2. Write answer-first pages
Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences. AI engines often quote a short, clear passage. A page that buries the answer under a long intro gives them less to use.
3. Add facts the AI can quote
The GEO-bench paper found that adding statistics, quotes and sources raised visibility by up to 40% in its tests. Use real numbers with named sources. Never invent them.
4. Get mentioned on other sites
Branded mentions across the web had a 0.664 correlation with AI Overview visibility in the Ahrefs study. That means reviews, comparisons, guest posts, podcasts, directories and community threads matter. Look at which domains AI engines already cite for your prompts. Those are the sites where a mention helps most.
5. Join real discussions
Reddit is one of the most cited domains in AI search. Do not spam it. Answer questions honestly where your product is relevant, and let users talk about you.
6. Update pages often
ChatGPT tends to cite newer pages. Review your key pages on a schedule. Update facts, prices and dates when they change, and say when you last checked them.
What does not work (or has no clear effect)?
Some popular tactics have weak or no evidence behind them.
| Tactic | What the research says |
|---|---|
| Schema markup for AI citations | Ahrefs matched test: no clear effect on AI citations |
| llms.txt files | SE Ranking (300,000 domains): no clear effect |
| Special files for Google AI features | Google: no special files are needed |
| Keyword stuffing | GEO-bench: lowered visibility in tests |
| Checking a prompt once | SparkToro and Gumshoe: same brand list in fewer than 1 in 100 runs |
Schema can still help with other search features, so you do not need to remove it. Just do not expect it to win AI citations on its own. The same goes for llms.txt: it is cheap to add, but there is no clear proof it helps.
The biggest mistake is not a tactic at all. It is measuring wrong.
How do you measure GEO?
AI answers change constantly. SparkToro and Gumshoe found that the same prompt gave the same brand list in fewer than 1 in 100 runs. If you ask a prompt once and see your brand, that tells you very little. If you ask once and do not see it, that tells you very little too.
Use mention rate, not single checks
The fix is to ask each prompt several times and record how often you appear. That is your mention rate.
Mention rate = runs that name or cite you ÷ total runs
| Prompt | Runs | Runs naming you | Mention rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| best invoicing app for freelancers | 5 | 3 | 60% |
| invoicing app vs spreadsheet | 5 | 1 | 20% |
| how to send a late payment reminder | 5 | 0 | 0% |
A prompt at 60% is a strength. A prompt at 0% where competitors appear is a gap worth a page. Read more on why AI answers change and how mention rate works.
What to track for each prompt
- Mention rate across several runs.
- Cited runs: how often you are linked, not just named.
- Competitor share: which rivals appear and how often.
- Cited domains: which other sites the AI uses as sources.
- Trend: the same numbers week over week.
Track the traffic too
Mentions are the leading signal. Visits and sign-ups are the result. Set up your analytics to separate AI referral traffic so you can see if your work pays off. Our guide to tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 walks through it.
AgenticSEO measures this for you in ChatGPT and Gemini. It asks each prompt several times (default 5 runs, 1 to 10), shows the mention rate, cited runs, competitor share and cited domains, and counts a prompt as visible at 50% or more. Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and AI Overviews tracking are on the roadmap.
A 30-day GEO plan
You do not need a big team to start. Here is a plan for one month.
Week 1: Set your baseline
- List 15 to 20 prompts your buyers would type. Use their words, not yours.
- Ask each prompt in ChatGPT and Gemini at least 3 to 5 times.
- Record your mention rate, competitors and cited domains.
- Check that your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing.
Week 2: Fix your best-fit pages
- Pick the 3 or 4 prompts with the biggest gaps where you have a real answer.
- Map each prompt to the best existing page, or plan a new one.
- Rewrite the opening of each page so it answers the prompt in two or three sentences.
- Add real statistics, quotes and sources where they fit.
- Update dates, prices and facts.
Week 3: Earn mentions
- Look at the domains the AI cites for your gap prompts.
- Find honest ways to appear there: reviews, comparison lists, guest posts or community answers.
- Answer relevant Reddit questions where your product truly helps.
- Publish one new answer-first page for a gap prompt.
Week 4: Measure and repeat
- Re-run the same prompts the same number of times.
- Compare mention rates with week 1.
- Note which changes lined up with gains, and which did not.
- Pick the next 3 or 4 gaps and repeat.
| Week | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline | Prompt list, mention rates, competitor and source list |
| 2 | On-page fixes | 3 to 4 improved pages |
| 3 | Mentions and new content | Outreach list, community answers, 1 new page |
| 4 | Re-measure | Week-over-week comparison, next gap list |
Be patient with the numbers. With answers this variable, one week is noise. A month of steady tracking shows the trend.
Common GEO mistakes
- Judging by one answer. Always use several runs.
- Tracking only your brand name. Track the problems buyers ask about, not just "what is [your brand]".
- Ignoring Bing. ChatGPT search leans heavily on results that match Bing.
- Chasing files and markup. Schema and llms.txt have no clear effect on AI citations so far.
- Inventing facts. Made-up statistics hurt trust and can spread into AI answers.
- Expecting guarantees. No one can promise that an AI engine will cite you.
The bottom line
GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO plus three habits: earn mentions across the web, write answer-first pages with real facts and measure mention rate over many runs. Start with a short prompt list, fix a few pages, earn a few mentions and re-measure every week.
