1. The free spreadsheet method
You do not need a tool to start. A spreadsheet and an hour of focus will show you more than you expect.
How to set it up
- Write 15 to 20 prompts. Use the words buyers use. Mix "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "how do I fix Z" and "is X worth it".
- Pick your engines. Start with ChatGPT and Gemini, since many buyers use them.
- Ask each prompt 3 times per engine. Use a fresh chat each time. AI answers change on almost every run, so one check can fool you.
- Record the results. For each run, note: were you named, were you cited with a link, which competitors were named and which domains were cited.
- Repeat weekly. Same prompts, same day, same method.
What your sheet should look like
| Prompt | Engine | Week | Runs | Runs naming you | Mention rate | Competitors named | Cited domains |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| best invoicing app for freelancers | ChatGPT | W1 | 3 | 1 | 33% | Brand A, Brand B | reddit.com, review site |
Mention rate is simple: runs that name you divided by total runs. Read why AI answers change and how mention rate works for more on this.
The limits
The math adds up fast. 20 prompts times 3 runs times 2 engines is 120 answers to read each week. It is easy to slip, skip a week or change how you phrase a prompt. That is when a paid tool starts to pay for itself.
- Best for: Testing whether AI visibility matters for your niche before you spend money.
- Pros: Free. You learn how AI answers your prompts first-hand.
- Cons: Slow. Easy to be inconsistent. No history charts.
2. Otterly.AI Lite
Otterly.AI is a tracker with a GEO audit. Its entry plan is the cheapest paid tool on this list.
- Best for: Solopreneurs who want automated tracking at the lowest price.
- Pros: $29 entry price. GEO audit helps find site issues.
- Cons: Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons, so check the real cost for the engines you need. It does not write content.
- Price: $29 a month; higher plans at $189 and $489.
3. HubSpot AEO
HubSpot AEO is a simple tracker for answer engine optimization.
- Best for: Small businesses that already use HubSpot.
- Pros: Low, flat price. Familiar vendor.
- Cons: Tracking only. You write the fixes yourself.
- Price: $50 a month.
4. Ahrefs Brand Radar (custom prompts)
Ahrefs Brand Radar shows AI mentions and share of voice. The custom prompts option is the budget entry point. The full AI index costs more.
- Best for: Solopreneurs already paying for Ahrefs.
- Pros: Share of voice against competitors. Sits next to your Ahrefs SEO data.
- Cons: Priced in euros. The AI index (from €179) is outside a small budget.
- Price: Custom prompts from €47 a month.
5. Writesonic
Writesonic combines GEO tracking with an AI writer. It is one of the few budget options that writes as well as tracks.
- Best for: Solo writers who want one tool for tracking and drafts.
- Pros: Tracking and writing in one place.
- Cons: The $79 price is for yearly billing, so you pay up front. Check its fact-checking before you publish claims about your product.
- Price: $79 a month on yearly billing; higher plans at $199 and $399.
6. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit
The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit adds AI tracking to Semrush.
- Best for: Solopreneurs who already use Semrush for SEO.
- Pros: Familiar interface. Clear price.
- Cons: $99 covers 25 prompts, which is at the top of a small budget. No content writing.
- Price: $99 a month for 25 prompts.
7. AgenticSEO Free and per-site plans (our product)
AgenticSEO tracks prompts in ChatGPT and Gemini, asks each one several times and shows a mention rate. Gaps turn into tickets. Then it writes a brief, writes the article, checks it in a QA gate and publishes only drafts that pass.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 | 3 shown, 7 locked | 3 | 4 a month, manual publish |

- Price: Free or $69 a month per site, plus AI usage billed by your provider. See full plan details.
We list it last because it is our product, and because its total cost depends on your AI usage, which makes it harder to compare at a glance.
How does AI pricing work?
AgenticSEO includes the AI in its plan price. You do not add an AI key or pay an AI bill, so the plan price is the total cost of the software and its AI work.
So your total monthly cost has two parts: the plan price and your AI usage. We will not quote AI prices here, because they change and differ by model. Instead, here is how to estimate the usage.
Count the AI checks
Each tracked prompt is asked once per run, on each engine. A weekly check looks like this:
| Plan | Prompts | Runs | Engines | Answers per weekly check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 3 shown | 3 | 2 (ChatGPT, Gemini) | 18 |
| Per site | 20 per site | 5 | 2 (ChatGPT, Gemini) | 200 per site |
Then add the writing work: briefs, articles and QA reviews for each article you create.
Turn checks into cost
- Look up your provider's current price for the model you plan to use.
- Run one week on a small prompt set.
- Open the AI usage page in AgenticSEO. It shows tokens and searches per job, ticket and day.
- Multiply by about four for a monthly estimate.
Keep usage in check
- Track fewer prompts at first. Add more once you know what matters.
- Lower runs per prompt. You can set 1 to 10 runs. Fewer runs cost less but give a noisier mention rate.
- Use separate OpenAI or Gemini keys for visibility checks if you want to track that spend on its own.
Read the AI is included guide for what the plan covers.
Which cheap tracker should you pick?
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| You are not sure AI visibility matters yet | Spreadsheet method |
| You want the cheapest automated tracker | Otterly.AI Lite |
| You already use HubSpot, Ahrefs or Semrush | That vendor's AI tool |
| You want tracking and a writer | Writesonic |
| You want tracking, writing, QA and publishing on a small budget | AgenticSEO Free or the per-site plan |
A good plan for most solopreneurs: run the spreadsheet method for two weeks. If the results show real gaps against competitors, move to a tool so you can spend your time fixing them, not counting them.
